  3. For many years thefts of militaria, old weapons, orders and decorations have been on the increase. Either private collections are targeted or dealers trading at militaria fairs and other events, but also museums have been affected. The latest announcement here: This helmet of 6. Thüringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 95 was damaged by a bullet at the battle of Le Mans on 12. January 1871. A label documents the presentation to the museum in 1913. Museum Hildburghausen in Thüringen, this helmet was stolen from the Museum collection on 22. 4. A 6 pound cannon round broke through the Cuirasse of Antoine Francois Faveau. The shot tore a massive hole through breast- and backplate. He died instantaneously. To be seen in the Musée de l'Armée des Invalides in Paris. 5. Starting a thread to showcase US WW2 era field gear. Feel free to add on as needed, the goal is to educate others on what to look for. There is still quite a good amount of original gear left over, especially in Europe. Up first is the M1943 folding shovel and M1910 entrenching tool, these shovels replaced the "T" handle M1910 shovels that were first used in WW1 (left side of photo). The M1910 was used in the first few years of the war until production of the new shovel could could be made in sufficient numbers. The M1910 looked identical to the WW1 version, the only difference is they are marked and dated on the handle. This one is dated 1942 made by Ames. WW1 versions do not have this mark on the handle. The M1910 was carried in a khaki colored canvas case that could be attached to the haversack or pistol belt. These were also identical to the WW1 versions, except for the dates. The M1943 pictured below was made by Ames and is dated 1945. The model proved so successful it was in service for many decades after WW2. These were made from 1943-45, the earlier the date, the rarer they are. The carrying case was a cotton web material that initially was OD green with a dark green border, however later in the war it was a darker OD shade completely. These also attached to the belt or pack as needed. The carrying case below is the early type, dated 1943. All of these shovels/E-tools and their cases are being reproduced. 1945 dated items are still very common, however 1943 ones are the hardest to find.

  6. Here is the M1938 map case. It was made on cotton web duct material, and ranged in color from khaki to a olive green color. Gear in the last year of war had a darker green appearance as well. Typically this case was used by Officers and NCOs and was secured by use of a carrying strap that could be adjusted and removed if need be. Under the main flap is a pouch that is sewn on that holds pencils, pens and other tools. In the main section inside was space for the plastic map graph (shown below) and other important documents. These have been getting hard to find in good condition lately and the prices have gone up. There are very exact replicas on the market today.

  8. Here is a clip of Jan Fedder, also interesting for me as a Beatles fan is the bass players guitar, a rare Höfner 500/1 bass guitar as used by Paul McCartney. A major boost for this bass came in early 1961 when it caught the eye of a young McCartney. In July 1961, before Stuart Sutcliffe decided to leave the Beatles, he briefly lent McCartney his bass guitar which he had bought in Hamburg until the latter could earn enough to buy a Höfner bass guitar of his own in 1961. Karl Höfner, founded the Höfner company in the city of Schönbach in 1887, at a time when the city, later part of the Czech Republic, was populated by Germans. He soon became the largest string instrument manufacturer in the country. During the war the Höfner company became involved in producing wooden crates and soles for boots for the German Army. After the war when the Germans were expelled from the Sudetenland, Höfner moved to West Germany where they opened their new factory in Möhrendorf in 1948. Much of Höfner's popularity is attributed to Paul McCartney's use of the Höfner 500/1 bass throughout his career. This violin-shaped model is commonly referred to as the "Beatle bass".

  10. Sonja Ziemann, Famous post-war actress * Eichwalde b. Potsdam, 1926, + München, 17.2.2020 aged 94, died last Monday at her home in München, as reported by DIE WELT. She had previously lived in St. Moritz and was married to Charles Regnier She was a living symbol of the German "Leitkultur". As a Black Forest Maiden Sonja Ziemann became the face of the post-war German Cinema. With Prussian discipline she played every rôle from operetta to anti-war film. Optimistic, confident and uncomplicated. Those were the qualities of the young actress, who in 1950 won the hearts of the German cinema public. A public who, after the stars of the NS-period, wanted to see new, guiltless faces on the cinema screen. Sonja Ziemann fulfilled this requirement in almost typically idea ways. Amongst her greatest film rôles, she played in the film "Nacht fiel vor Gotenhafen", 1959 After the death of her third husband, Charles Regnier, she withdrew from public life, lived in St. Moritz, and finally in Munich, where she died at the age of 94.

  12. That is happening everywhere here, no cemetery is safe any longer. Years ago, nothing like this would ever have happened, but now we have open borders and a so much appraised "open society". The bands mostly come from Eastern Europe, Balkans, possibly Turkey or the middle east, they are well organised and can cross the borders without any problems, any time. Eberhard Bröll was a militaria dealer in Baden-Württemberg, he used to advertise his stock in Waffenjournal (Schwend-Verlag). He was found murdered in a wood near the Autobahn somewhere in the Southwest in the early 1990s. Kempster was a gunsmith in central London with a large trading stock, also of antique items. I remember reading that he was murdered in the 1980s. "Opa" Harms lived just below the other side of the Elbe near Hamburg (Harburg or Wilhelmsburg?). He was renowned in collector's circles for his collection of Imperial German uniforms and regalia, many of the famous regiments represented. He was found murdered and a large amount of his collection stolen. This was reported in the Bild Zeitung in the late 70s or early 80s. The crime was never solved as far as I know. Theft at Günzenhausen, Germany: In the night of Oct. 6th to 7th 2006 serveral dealers in the exhibition hall has been heisted. Two showcases were broken open and a larger quantity of honors as well as some papers and photos were stolen. To a large extend it concerns honors of the former Luftwaffe, as well as two golden party badges ever with document and award number! For pertinent references, which lead to the seizure auf the thefts and to the replacement of the commodity, the company Claus Philipp sets out a reward of up to Euro 5000,--! Several Spanienkreuze in gold, silver and bronze were stolen, also Spanish Civil War wound badges in silver, a German Cross with maker "1" in presentation case, a futher example by maker "20", an unmarked Godet example with 6 rivets, a Knights Cross in original case and two further examples of this decoration, one with complete estate, various Luftwaffe badges incl. pilots, etc. 800 marked, complete estate. 800 marked 65/800 marked Kampfflieger in Silver, several examples, boxed. Kampfflieger in Gold, boxed Several pilots' badges and other LW war badges Golden Party Badge with document 90281 Paper group, KG 27, Feldwebel Werner Nickel Golden Party Badge with document 98796

18. Here is a M1910 first aid pouch made during WW2, as far as I can tell this was the last production run for this model. Not much is known about this item, it has been theorized they were made immediately after Pearl Harbor, as the companies that made them still had the specifications and they were quick to make.

  19. During the war a lot of items were made overseas to support US troops, this example of the first aid pouch is British made.

  20. Here is the M1924 first aid pouch, which had a brass pistol belt attachment to fix to the belt or gear as needed. Inside it held one carlisle bandage. These were similar to the WW1 versions, however the WW2 types did not have a pull ring and were not dated. The M1924 also used the lift the dot closure to seal the pouch shut. Interestingly enough this pouch was updated to the M1942 version which looked almost identical except in color, pre-war and ones before 1942 were of a khaki color, 1942-43 was a shade called OD#3 (Olive Drab number 3) and late war models are colored dark with the shade OD#7.

  21. Here is the M1938 Wire Cutter and pouch. The M1938 WW2 version looks slightly different than later versions and will always have a WW2 date on it. The carrying case is also early with the dark green border. The cutters were used from many decades after the war as well. Most commonly you will find 1970s era types, these have a hex nut and bolt (also pictured below). Note the difference in the shape of the cutting head of the WW2 version, vs later ones.
