Medal mounting and display

Hi guys,

So I'm getting into Austrian medals at the moment. Few reasons, they are cheaper than German, not so much faked, and having recently read up on the Austrian military from its founding, it is under represented and should be better respected for what it was.

Anyway, looking for ideas for medal displays that allows for impressive display of medals but also allows for easy expansion. I tend to start at the lower end and move up, for example bronze, silver, gold Austrian wound badges. Black, silver, gold then cutout version of German, etc etc. Also have a big interest in 19th century campaign medals.

Any thoughts on how to display them? Just get medal brooches of various sizes and expand as the medals do and mount that on a display case?

I would suggest flat glass display cases if you have enough space available. However, medals and decorations should be protected from sunlight and dust. Mounting and pinning of ribbons should be avoided for obvious reasons. Otherwise a cabinett with flat drawers is ideal. Medal envelopes are also okay.

Hi Greg, we do medal mounting however if the collection is growing then it's probably not the best option. Display cabinets are probably the best bet , I use Ikea detolf cabinets. If you have space they are great, you can also add other items such as helmets etc until the cabinet fills with medals. They are only £40 and a light can also be fitted. I see they now make them in black which looks pretty cool, my ones are light mahogany but I think I prefer the new black ones.

thanks guys... I have a small wall mount glass cabinet I got at TK Maxx a while back that I use to store restoration and cleaning supplies in. But having a think of this, might take that junk out and use it for medals now :)
