Favourite part of History?

Helen

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would ask a little question as I haven't been on here a lot recently.

Apart from World War 2. what is your favourite era to study?

For me, I like the English Civil War, Georgian Britain and Tsarist Russia.

I do enjoy the more modern history events such as the First Indochina War, the infamous second one and Korea etc.

Mostly the Vietnam wars. I've always been fascinated by them, I guess Full Metal Jacket is to blame for this! If I had the cash I would love to collect Vietnam era items.

God... Where to start...

The Greek and Early Roman Wars are amazing to study because we know so much and so little at the same time. Because we only have the basic history recorded you can look at a concept of 'pure' war without all the ugliness of over analysis of today.

The American wars from independence to the Civil War are a speciality for me, especially the development of military theory at this time,

Imperial Germany during the Franco Prussian War and WW1 are fun. And I am getting into Eastern European conflicts of the Hapsburg's at the moment.

Kyle - Vietnam is a fascinating study! Especially the sad development from WW2 and lost opportunities to prevent the who thing. My final year university course for my BA in History was spent on the Vietnam War. And I have a ton of Vietnam items :)

I've heavily read the Cold War and how Israel basically invented the concept of conventional warfare short of total war in the nuclear age but won't bore you with that!

I love the film Full Metal Jacket, possibly one of my favourite war films.

Greg- American War of Independence. Two words. Burgoyne, Saratoga.

yeah Saratoga didn't work out too well for you Brits did it eh?

Want an interesting campaign from the War for Independence... Look at the Penobscot expedition. It wasn't a main army action for the US but rather the militia of Massachusetts against a British force of mainly Scottish highlanders.

It was a total disaster for the US which led them burning or having the Brits capture their entire fleet. Had everything too, naval battles, siege warfare, artillery battles.
