leon21
Here's a Wehrpass for Franz Weber of Erlinghagen North Rhine-Westphalla born on 26 August 1895, a mason by profession served with Stab III / Infantry Regiment 464 from 27.8.39 to 28.10.39. Transferred to. 5 / Landesschutzen Battalion 486. from 1.6.40 to 12.8.40. Which was created on 1.6.40 from the National Rifle Battalion in Military District VI. The Battalion was set up to 6 Companies for Guarding Prisoners of War in Arnsberg After installation it became ZBV Division 406. On 12.8.40 sent to Wehrkreis Ersatz Depot/Department VI for reassessment for duty, after tests and physicals he received a K.V. ( "Kriegsverwendungsfahig ") rating ie- conditionally fit for war service, but was discharged from the army on 13.8.40 due to his age he was then 45 years old. I've seen a few of these type of wehrpass books for veterans who would normally be transferred to a Landwehr or reserve regiment ( Home Front ). Do you think his skill as a mason was needed more in civilian life and that was important enough for the war department to defer his Military service. He was recalled in 1943 reassessed again given another K.V. rating and transferred to Landwehr I for Guarding duties. Can anybody read the 3rd line from bottom and last line on page 24, there the only two lines I can't make out.

Greg
yeah I'll run it by here, I cannot make it out. I think a Mason would be useful in civilian service - you would need them the rebuilding bomb damage, building new factories and buildings, etc. Especially if from an area that either needs a few or from an area you may be one of very few and thus critical to keep infrastructure running, I could see why that would give you a exemption from military service. Without further evidence it is speculation though,
Fritz
Third line from bottom on page 24 reads: Jahrgang 1896 und älter.... last line looks like: 20. S??? Gummersbach
leon21
Thanks Paul. Of course it makes sense now, 3rd line reason for discharge ( his age ). And last line were his files would be returned and kept at his Recruitment Headquarters/Depot in Gummersbach.
