The surrender was just a mere formality for the open city, 99% of all resistance had collapsed all round. Karl Kaufmann, Reichsstatthalter and Oberbürgermeister had agreed to a surrender of the open city, to avoid further unnecessary loss of life. Contemporary Pathé Newsreel. The large bridge in the pictures is the Wilhelmsburger Reichsbrücke (over the River Elbe - at the other side is Harburg), which was still in use till at least the early 1980s:
