Hi Greg, the first 20 vehicles designated Ausf A were built to the prototype design in order to get production under way. Tests

showed that the design was overweight and underpowed, to increase power a new HL 230 engine was fitted to subsequent

production vehicles Ausf D other improvements were added gearbox and steering systems, armour thickness was also increased.

In early 1943 Ausf A vehicles were officially reclassified D1 and production vehicles D2 by May 324 Panthers were in service.

The modifications to the Panther Ausf D2 were far from sufficient to solve its mechanical problems, the engine was prone to

overheating and catching fire problems with the final drive, transmission and the steering were also a weakness.

Dispite Guderian's doubts, Hitler insisted that the Panther should be put into service in time for the offensive at Kursk .Of the 200

Panthers in Hoth's 4th Pz Army, 160 were out of action by the end of the first day, many had broken down between the railheads

and the front others on the battlefield as they could not be towed had to be left. By the time the Kursk offensive was over a new

Panther model, rather confusingly called the Ausf A was in production.

Guderian told Hitler to forget about Kursk as he had just rebuilt the panzer divisions and now wanted to equip the Panzer divisions in the West where the biggest threat was expected in 1944 from an Allied invasion. He was even warned by Model about the massive Soviet defenses being built to entrap the German army should it attack. No wonder the Allies did not want to assassinate Hitler.
