leon21 Posted January 25, 2013 Share Posted January 25, 2013 1st Mountain Division = ( 1 Gebirgs Div ). Created on 9th April 1938 in Garmisch Partenkirchen Germany from the ( Mountain Brigade ) consisted mainly of Bavarians and some Austrians. A notable member of the division was Chiang Wei-Kuo, adopted son of ( President Chiang Kai-Shek ) and also adopted brother and future ( President Chiang Ching-Kuo of China. With his brother being held as a virtual political hostage in the Soviet Union by Stalin having previously been a student studying in Moscow. Chiang Wei-Kuo was sent to Germany for Military Education at the Munich Military Academy in 1936. After completing his training Wei-Kuo then went on and completed specialized alpine warfare training, thus earning him the Elite Mountain troop Edelweiss sleeve insignia. He was promoted to the rank of FahnenJunker ( Officer Candidate ), he was also a fine marksmann as you can see in the photos he is wearing the marksmann lanyard. He commanded a panzer unit during the 1938 Austrian Anschluss as a Sergeant Officer-Candidate leading a tank into Austria. Subsequently he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant of a panzer unit awaiting to be sent into Poland. Before he was given the mobilization order he was recalled to China.
